  • Delights of Drawing - Sheila Bryan
    Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs
    Working through simple projects, we will cover the basic skills of drawing using a variety of materials. Looking at still life, objects and landscape, we will study light and shade, composition, represent space and form, and mark-making. The course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their drawing skills.

  • Birds (and more) for Beginners - David Chandler
    Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs
    Ever wondered what that bird was? This course will help you work it out, with sessions on equipment and identification as well as daily field trips. Most of the course will focus on birds, but some time will be spent looking at other wildlife too, especially dragonflies. The course tutor, David Chandler, is a writer and environmental educator.

  • Bricklaying for All - Brian Reynolds
    Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri
    A practical course that will enable novices to become competent bricklayers. If you want to build your own barbeque, an extension or something in between, this is the course for you. The relevant theory is covered in the practical sessions.

  • Fun with Flowers - Julie Woods
    Mon, Tues, Wed
    This course explores both traditional and modern floral designs, catering for all abilities. Some traditional styles will be shown, all to be adapted for the home or church. The modern styles will use some manipulative techniques with an emphasis on using bold and dramatic flowers and foliage while experimenting with different mechanics. All designs will be demonstrated and a comprehensive list sent on enrolment with some materials available to order from the tutor.

  • Knitting Freedom - Liz Marley
    Mon, Tues, Wed
    Freeform knitting uses deceptively simple techniques to get a surprisingly complex result. If you can knit, purl, cast on and off and have a spirit of adventure, you could make a piece of
    knitted fabric which might become a scarf, cushion, bag or wall-hanging. The only limit is your imagination!

  • Bridge for Beginners - Paul Fegarty
    Mon, Tues, Wed
    This class is for people with some knowledge of contract bridge. The ACOL system of bidding is used with some extra conventions. Improve your card play and learn correct habits and etiquette at the table. No absolute beginners, please.

  • Belly Dance – Finger Cymbals for the Terrified - Carol Goodwin
    Mon, Tues, Wed
    Learn the basic moves involved in belly dance, or perfect those you already know. You will also learn how to use finger cymbals and play them while dancing. We will then put this all together to create a simple but effective choreography to perform for fun! All welcome: beginners or those with some experience.

  • A General Introduction to Beadwork Jewellery - Gillian Ashwell
    Tues, Wed, Thurs
    Stunningly individual and intricate two and three-dimensional pieces of jewellery can be created from tiny seed beads of different sizes plus a few larger beads, drops and crystals, and all using just needles and thread. Spend an enjoyable three days working on projects of your choice selected from a huge range and using some of the myriad, fascinating and ancient techniques of beadwork. Suitable for all abilities.
2 Day Course 10am - 4pm: £80
  • Belly Dance: Drum Solo Technique - Carol Goodwin
    Thurs, Fri
    Learn the popular rhythms used in drum solos and how to interpret them. You will learn how to use those moves to create a dynamic drum solo. Suitable for improver/intermediate level
    dancers.

Summer School 2009
Introducing our Summer School
Cottenham Village College is in the heart of a beautiful
Cambridgeshire village at the edge of the Fens and just 6 miles from the city of Cambridge. The Summer School, which started 13 years ago, has established itself as first choice for a convivial and friendly atmosphere, value for money, great food and a constantly changing list of courses with the best experienced tutors.

Come and join us, along with other people, for a week
where learning is simply a pleasure.

Courses will run from l0am till 4pm each day with a twocourse
buffet lunch, coffee and tea, and free entry to the swimming pool at the end of every session included in the fee. Not included in the course fee: materials, minibus travel, entry fees.

Children and young people aged 14+ may be accepted on a course provided individual tutors are in agreement.

Child care facilities: we are unable to provide these, but we may be able to give you information about possibilities of child care in the Cottenham area. Please enquire.

  • Fragmented: Stitch & Mixed Media - Pauline Verrinder
    With new approaches to using mixed media, paper, fabric and stitch, fragments of textile art will evolve from designed experimentation. Limited only by your imagination, your collection of stitched fragments will be transformed into pieces of textile art. Experience with free machine embroidery essential.

  • Botanical Illustration - Georita Harriott
    For students of all abilities, this course covers the entire process of producing a botanical watercolour drawing, from pencil studies to a finished watercolour. Includes an historical talk on botanical art. We will cover theory, colour mixing and watercolour techniques. For those who have already completed two Botanical Illustration Summer Schools, there will be advanced tuition in separate groups.

  • Stained Glass - Jill Fordham
    Day 1: Suitable for complete beginners to learn and make a small sun catcher using copper foiling technique.
    Days 2 to 5: Make a leaded stained glass window. Learn the ancient art focusing on traditional-style painting on glass after taking inspiration from the work of traditional glass painters. If you have other ideas for a stained glass window, please apply and let the tutor know.

  • Introduction to Weaving - Anna Crutchley
    Learn to weave on a four-shaft loom. In this course you will have the opportunity to sample a variety of different weave structures, experimenting with colour combinations, yarn qualities, surface textures and effects. End results can range from braids and fringes for soft furnishing, to cushion covers and scarves. Looms will be threaded up ready for beginners. Weavers with previous experience are also welcome, and are encouraged to discuss their ideas with
    the tutor before the course.

  • Sensational Screen Printing - Ricki Outis
    A week of discovery as you learn different techniques for screen printing onto textiles. This medium is colourful, adaptable and amazingly fast. The emphasis is on the experimental and you can print onto lengths of fabric, T-shirts, bags or pillowcases. All levels welcome.

  • Start to Dress make! - Sally Tilley
    Do you want to make your own clothes? This course could be the one for you! During the week you will make a basic well-fitting skirt, as well as learn a variety of useful techniques to develop your confidence to go away and create your own clothes at home. Techniques: seams and seam finishes, inserting zips, pockets, machine finished button holes, hems, waistbands & cuffs.

  • Introduction to Egg Tempera Painting - Rebecca Merry
    Learn the basic techniques of egg tempera painting on this popular course. Egg tempera uses egg yolk and pigment to make a bright durable paint as used by the Renaissance masters before the introduction of oil paint. Learn how to make gesso (plaster) panels, gilding and tempera paint to create your own painting.

  • Abstract Painting in Oils - Jenny Eadon
    This course is for those who wish to try their hand at abstraction and those already familiar with it. Working in oils, acrylic and mixed media, and getting inspiration from both objective and non-objective sources, we will cover composition, alignment, colour and texture. Start thinking about it now.

  • Tapestry Weaving - Christine Elliott-Grey
    Tapestry weaving is an ancient process so simple in principle that it may be taken in many directions, from the creation of complex imagery to bold colour-field pieces. Play with texture and colour and learn a range of techniques. Bring along ideas for a project of your own or play with the geometry of the warp. It is suitable for students of all abilities from beginners to those with some experience.

  • Upholstery Workshop - Cindy Mason
    Why not bring that old chair or stool to give it a new lease of life? You will be taught the correct techniques using traditional and modern materials. There will be group demonstrations and individual instruction.

  • Digital Photography Workshop - Malcolm Clarke
    A practical workshop to improve your digital photography from beginner to intermediate. There will be field trips, demonstrations, presentations and analysis/discussion by our international photographer tutor of digital terminology and equipment, portraiture, landscape and travel, documentary, sport and action, architecture, macro and other topics of photography.

  • Silver Jewellery - John Rothwell
    This course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who want to learn the techniques needed to make rings, pendants and earrings as well as stone setting.
    Day 1 will suit beginners, giving them a grounding in basic techniques with the opportunity to design and make an item of jewellery.
    Days 2 to 5: students progress daily, applying more advanced techniques to new projects and making a new item of jewellery each day. Friday afternoon is a time for free expression to make any item you wish.

  • Painting Landscapes in Watercolour - David Hyde
    Painting is a wonderfully challenging and satisfying pastime. Come and learn an approach to the most classic of all English painting styles: landscapes in watercolour. The course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience. Instruction will be given on drawing and composition as well as technique and colour mixes. Your tutor, David Hyde, is an experienced local professional artist whose friendly and informative style will ensure you have a rewarding and enjoyable week.

  • Pottery - Helen Humphreys
    Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs plus glazing day Sat 8 August
    On this practical course, you will learn how to pinch, coil, press-mould and slab-build clay to make beautiful and useful items. You can make anything from decorated bowls, tiles and buttons to frostproof garden sculpture and house signs. Suitable for beginners and the more experienced.
Activity : fee £35 full week
  • Walking in Cambridgeshire - David Thomas
    Explore the footpaths and ancient tracks of this beautiful county. Some local walks plus 11 miles around stud farms near Newmarket, a walk from Tempsford, and a ramble around the ancient village of Croxton. Please book ahead if possible.
