- Harmonica Workshop -
Steve Lockwood
This event will cover from a complete
beginner to intermediate level and will
enable people to play along with different
styles of music including Irish, Blues, Pop,
Classical and show tunes. Harmonicas can
be purchased on the day for £8 or bring
your own diatonic (blues harp) in the Key
of C. Steve has performed with Larry Adler,
Lee Oskar and the Royal Philharmonic

Bring any instrument along and work
towards a final performance. This session
will involve coaching, improvisation, song
writing and stage presence. Delivered by
Steve Lockwood, 60 albums, 3000
concerts, music lecturer for 10 years.
Coach vocalist for Stars in their Eyes and
coach of various rock competition winners
including the Cambridge Band
competition. Steve runs the Willingham
Jam Club on the last Monday of every
month.

following a prehistoric trade route,
climbing to the highest point in South West

with our wonderful plant material for the
home, church or celebrations while
meeting like-minded people. The
emphasis of the course is to relax, have
fun and enjoy the therapeutic properties of
working with plant material.

- Calligraphy – The Italic Script -
Christine Robinson
A two day course for beginners and
improvers to focus on this elegant script.
You will learn this calligraphic script by
practising the letter shapes, looking at the
spacing of letters and words and using
decorative ways of enhancing your work
to produce a small block of text. We will
also look at the use of colour as a
background and for the writing. The
course is suitable for beginners, left handed people and those with some
experience but no artistic ability is
necessary.

Why not bring that old chair or stool to
give it a new lease of life? You will be
taught the correct techniques using
traditional and modern materials. There

This class is for people having some
knowledge of contract bridge. The ACOL
system of bidding will be used with some
extra conventions. Improve your card play
and learn correct habits and etiquette at

- Bees & Bee Keeping -
Dr Bill Block
A short introduction to the ancient and
fascinating art of beekeeping. The course
covers the biology of bees, their
husbandry, beekeeping equipment,
swarming, the products of the hive, pests
and diseases, and the importance of bees
for pollination and conservation. It gives
an overview of a vast subject, but it is not
a training course in beekeeping.

- Dragonflies for beginners -
David Chandler
A two day introduction to these brilliant
creatures, focusing mostly on dragonflies
you can see locally. Learn about their life
cycle, breeding and feeding behaviour, and
take the first steps in identifying
dragonflies for yourself. Weather
permitting, we’ll visit local dragonfly sites
on both days. Also includes some simple
tips on creating a pond for dragonflies.

Here we have a great opportunity to know
and prepare real original Mexican food.
Explore and try the wide range of colours,

Venue: Cottenham Village College is in the heart of a beautiful
Cambridgeshire village just 6 miles from the city of Cambridge, and in
easy reach of Ely and the Fens. All facilities are accessible to the
disabled.
Duration: The courses run between the 2nd – 6th August 2010, lengths
varying from 1 to 5 days. Each day will start at 10am and finish at 4pm.
Fees: 5 day: £215; 4 day: £180; 3 day: £135; 2 day: £90; 1 day: £45.
The fees include lunch and refreshments. To secure your place, full
payment is required by 1st June 2010.
Full time students ONLY may apply for a fee reduction of 25% – proof
of status required.
Not included in fees: Materials, cooking ingredients, minibus travel,
and entry fees to other establishments.
Refunds: Please note that 20% of the course fee is non-refundable if
you withdraw from the course before 1st June 2010. No refunds will
be given after 1st June 2010.
Accommodation: We do not provide accommodation but can supply
a list of local B & Bs if required. Please indicate on the application

| TEXTILES |
- Tantalising - Translucent and Manipulated -
Pauline Verrinder
An experimental workshop for the
adventurous embroiderer.
Working with a variety of transparent
fabrics, embroiderers will experiment with
manipulation, layering, trapping,
distressing, re-constructing, colouring and
stitching. Translucent fabrics will be
combined with unconventional materials
to encourage the exploration of new and
original methods of working and creating.
Experience with free machine embroidery
is essential.

- Batik – Dyeing to Discharge -
Lee Cresswell
Students will explore the technique of
batik on paper and fabric. They will
practice the layering of wax and dyes to
achieve depth and will also discover the
possibilities of bleach discharge after
painting and waxing. Sample pieces can
later be incorporated in contemporary
quilts or machine embroidery can be
applied to further enhance surface design.

- Introduction to Weaving - Anna Crutchley
Learn to weave on a four-shaft loom. In
this course you will have the opportunity
to sample a variety of different weave
structures, experimenting with colour
combinations, yarn qualities, surface
textures and effects. End results can
range from braids and fringes for soft
furnishing, to cushion covers and scarves.
Looms will be threaded up ready for
beginners. Weavers with previous
experience are also welcome, and are
encouraged to discuss their ideas with the
tutor in advance of the course.

- Sensational Screen Printing -
Ricki Outis
A week of discovery as you learn different
techniques for screen printing onto
textiles. This medium is colourful,
adaptable and amazingly fast. The focus is
on developing your own style and you can
print onto lengths of fabric, T-shirts, bags
and pillowcases.

- Start to Dress make! -
Sally Tilley
Do you want to make your own clothes?
Well this course could be the one for you!
During the week you will make a basic
well fitting skirt, as well as learn a variety
of useful techniques which will develop
your confidence to go away and create
you own clothes at home. Techniques:
Seams and seam finishes, inserting zips,
pockets, machine finished button holes,
hems, waistbands & cuffs.

- Patchwork -
Cherry Vernon-Harcourt
Come and learn how to stitch block
patchwork and appliqué designs using
basic to advanced techniques. Discover
how to layer, quilt and bind the results to
make cushions, bags or quilts. This course
is suitable for beginners who can sew by
hand and machine or the more
experienced patch worker.

- Geometric knitting -
Liz Marley
Use simple increases and decreases and
work on different types of needles to
produce shapes you can tessellate, and
explore ways of avoiding sewing things
up. If you can knit, purl, cast on and off
and have a spirit of adventure, your
samples could become a bag, cushion,
decorative piece or whatever your
imagination suggests!

- Botanical Illustration -
Georita Harriott
For students of all abilities, this course
covers the entire process of producing a
botanical watercolour drawing, from
pencil studies to a finished watercolour.
Includes an historical talk on botanical art.
We will cover theory, colour mixing and
watercolour techniques. For those who
have already completed two Botanical
Illustration Summer Schools, there will be
advanced tuition in separate groups.

- Painting Landscapes in Watercolour -
David Hyde
Painting is a wonderfully challenging and
satisfying pastime. Come and learn an
approach to the most classic of all English
painting styles: landscapes in watercolour.

as well as technique and colour mixes.

Sheila Bryan
Working through simple projects, we will
cover the basic skills of drawing using a
variety of materials. Looking at still life,
objects and landscape, we will study light
and shade, composition, represent space
and form and mark-making. The course is
suitable for beginners and those wishing
to refresh their drawing skills.

- Silver Jewellery -
John Rothwell
This course is suitable for beginners and
those with some experience who want to
learn the techniques to make rings,
pendants and earrings as well as stone
setting. Day 1 will suit beginners giving
them grounding in basic techniques with
the opportunity to design and make an
item of jewellery. On days 2–5 students
will progress daily applying more
advanced techniques to new projects and
making a new item of jewellery each day.
Friday afternoon will be a time for free
expression to make any item you wish.

- A General Introduction to Beadwork Jewellery -
Gillian Ashwell
Stunningly individual and intricate two and
three-dimensional pieces of jewellery can
be created from tiny seed beads of
different sizes plus a few larger beads,
drops and crystals, and all using just
needles and thread. Spend an enjoyable
four days working on projects of your
choice selected from a huge range and
using some of the myriad, fascinating and
ancient techniques of beadwork. Suitable
for all levels of ability.
4 Days (Tue–Fri), 10am – 4pm, £180
- Dichroic Glass Jewellery -
Fiona Gooch
Learn how to cut and fuse coloured and
dichroic glass into some unique and
stunning pieces. In this session we will
cover safety and basic tehniques for
handling and cutting and then we will be
designing and assembling pendants. Glass
needs 6-8 hours in the kiln so the tutor
will fire your pieces after the session and
they will be ready later in the week or can
be posted out.

- Indian Head Massage - Stephanie Satriawan
Learn all you need to give your loved ones
a rejuvenating and therapeutic massage
at home. Find out how stress can affect
our muscles and body, and learn to give a
restoring massage, concentrating on the
upper back, neck, shoulders and head,
where we commonly hold our tension. Fun
as well as instructive – a great experience
to share with a friend or partner.

- Bellydance - Creative Combinations! - Carol Goodwin
Learn how to put the moves you learn in class together to create clever combinations. Day One - We will explore new technique and incorporate this into 3 and 4 step combinations which can be linked together to create your own choreographies. Day Two - Continuing on from day one we will create further combinations and also include the use of props!
