  • Pottery - Helen Humphreys
    Mon, Tues, Wed plus one day for firing
    Come and make hand-built stoneware pottery, anything from leaf bowls, vases and tiles to garden sculpture. This course is suitable for beginners and the more advanced.

  • Delights of Drawing - Sheila Bryan
    Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs
    Working through simple projects, we will cover the basic skills of drawing using a variety of materials. Looking at still life, objects and landscape, we will study light and shade, composition, represent space and form, and mark-making. The course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their drawing skills.

  • Birds (and more) for Beginners - David Chandler

    Ever wondered what that bird was? This course will help you work it out, with sessions on equipment and identification as well as daily field trips. Most of the course will focus on birds, but some time will be spent looking at other wildlife too, especially dragonflies. The course tutor, David Chandler, is a writer and environmental educator. He is the author of All About Bugs and All About Garden Wildlife, and co-author of the R.S.P.B. Children’s Guide to Birdwatching. He also writes for ‘Bird Watching’ magazine.

  • Mexican Cookery - Luis Cossio

    Come and enjoy a trip through Mexican cookery. Explore the wide range of flavours, colours, textures and variety of dishes that can be prepared with authentic recipes. Try foods that can be spicy but not hot, and realise how easy it is to prepare dishes of Mexican food.

  • Bricklaying for All - Brian Reynolds
    Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri
  • A practical course that will enable the novices to become competent bricklayers. If you want to build your own barbecue, an extension or something in between, this is the course for you. The relevant theory is covered in the practical sessions.

  • Scrapbooking for Beginners - Jenny Ambrose

  • Not quite sure what to do with your photos? Why not try this elegant pastime enjoyed by the Victorians. This class will be suitable for complete beginners and those who have made a start but need some encouragement and ideas. We will create several page layouts and learn different craft techniques.

  • Get to Know Britain's Wildlife - Alison Pearson

  • For people who want to learn more about the wildlife in their gardens or the countryside. It is suitable for the complete novice, or for those with basic knowledge of common wildlife species who want to learn more about their ecology.

  • Tapestry Weaving - Christine Elliot Grey
    Mon, Tues, Wed
  • Experiment with weaving forms and colours into a piece of textile art using a range of materials. Tapestry weaving is a process so simple in principle that it may be taken in many directions. All welcome; beginners or those with experience.

  • Silver Jewellery - John Rothwell

  • Day 1: Suitable for compete beginners. You will receive a good grounding in the basic techniques with the opportunity to make something of your own choice and design.
    Days 2 & 3: More advanced jewellery making techniques for those who have completed a basic course.

  • Bridge for Beginners - Paul Fegarty

  • This class is for people having some knowledge of contract bridge. The ACOL system of bidding will be used with some extra conventions. Improve your card play and learn correct habits and etiquette at the table. No absolute beginners.

  • Knitting in Three Dimensions - Liz Marley

  • Knitting doesn’t have to be flat; explore the alternatives on a course including bags, pots and more sculptural pieces. Ability to cast on and off, knit and purl – along with a willingness to explore – are needed!

  • Patchwork Quilting & Appliqué for All - Cherry Vernon-Harcourt
    Mon, Tues, Wed
  • Come and learn how to stitch block patchwork designs, using basic to advanced techniques. Discover how to quilt, layer and bind the results to make cushions, bags or quilts. The course is suitable for all abilities and students can work at their own pace. A sewing machine is desirable but not essential.

  • A Celebration in Flowers - Julie Woods

    Within this world of hi-tech enjoy three days of relaxation creating decorative floral designs. Each day will be exploring a different style from the historical through to the traditional and onto the contemporary designs of today. Some of the designs will use garden flowers (so you could start planting now) and then we shall be using bold dramatic exotic flowers and leaves which may be ordered from the tutor in advance.

  • T’ai Chi Chuan and Polarity: Energy approaches from East and West - Alison Warlow, Christine Reedyke

  • This course will include physical exercises from both traditions, massage technique bodywork, and an introduction to the philosophies behind Polarity and T'ai Chi. By the end of the workshop you will have gained practical skills and a theoretical understanding to enhance your own wellbeing and that of those around you.

  • Design your own Website - Alice Darcy

    A quick introduction to webpage design, enabling you to create your own simple website using HTML. You will be shown what makes a good website and an introduction to Dreamweaver.

  • Discover the Feldenkrais Method - Valerie Fabre
    Mon
    Whatever your age and ability you can learn to move easily and freely. Explore unusual, easy, and gentle movements that will make it possible for you to experience changes and feel differences between your habitual ways of moving and newly discovered options. No previous experience required.

Introducing our Summer School
Cottenham Village College is in the heart of a beautiful
Cambridgeshire village at the edge of the Fens and just 6 miles from the city of Cambridge. The Summer School, which started 13 years ago, has established itself as first choice for a convivial and friendly atmosphere, value for money, great food and a constantly changing list of courses with the best experienced tutors.

Come and join us, along with other people, for a week
where learning is simply a pleasure.

Courses will run from l0am till 4pm each day with a twocourse
buffet lunch, coffee and tea, and free entry to the swimming pool at the end of every session included in the fee. Not included in the course fee: materials, minibus travel, entry fees.

Children and young people aged 14+ may be accepted on a course provided individual tutors are in agreement. Child care facilities: we are unable to provide these, but we may be able to give you information about possibilities of child care in the Cottenham area. Please enquire.

5 Day Courses : fee £180
  • Stitch & Recycled Materials - Pauline Verrinder
    Do you have a passion for creating embroidery but feel the need to push the boundaries and move out of your comfort zone? This course will revolve around the use of recycled materials and stitch, experimentation and set challenges. For the experienced embroiderer with free machine embroidery skills.

  • Passementerie: Tassels & Fringes for interior decoration - Anna Crutchley
    The course is split into two parts and you can join in either part or both. Three table looms will be available to weave braids and fringes to compliment your tassels. No previous experience of weaving is necessary.
    Days 1 & 2: Key tassels – basic tassel making.
    Days 3–5: Advanced techniques for those who have completed a basic course.

  • Stained Glass - Jill Fordham
    If you are a complete beginner, it is advisable to start on Day 1 to learn the basics and make a suncatcher or candle holder using copperfoiling techniques. The more experienced student may join on Day 2 to design and make their own stained glass window using the leaded technique.

  • Abstract Painting in Oils - Jenny Eadon
    This course is for those wanting to try their hand at abstraction and those already familiar with it. Working in oils, acrylic and mixed media, and getting inspiration from both objective and nonobjective sources, we will cover composition, alignment, colour and texture. Start thinking about it now.

  • Digital Photography Workshop - Malcolm Clarke
    A practical-based workshop to improve your digital photography from beginner to intermediate. There will be field trips and demonstrations by our international press photographer in portraiture and weddings, landscapes and travel, composition and documentary, sport and action, architectural and other photography.

  • Painting Landscapes in Watercolour - David Hyde
    Painting is a wonderfully challenging and satisfying pastime. Come and learn an approach to the most classic of all English painting styles: landscapes in watercolour. The course is suitable for beginners and those with more experience. Instruction will be given on drawing and composition as well as technique and colour mixes. Your tutor, David Hyde, is an experienced local professional artist whose friendly and informative style will ensure
    you have a rewarding and enjoyable week.

  • Introduction to Egg Tempera Painting - Rebecca Merry
    This course, which has proved very popular, gives an introduction to painting in egg tempera, the primary medium of the masters of the Renaissance before the development of oils. Learn how to make gesso (plaster), gild, and make paint out of eggs and pigment to create your own panel.

  • Roman Blinds - Grace Boulter
    Are you tired of bare windows or old curtains? Would you like to make your own modern window dressings? Come and learn from an expert how to make a lined and interlined roman blind.

  • Botanical Illustration - Georita Harriott
    This course covers the entire process of producing a botanical watercolour drawing, from pencil studies to a finished watercolour. Includes an historical talk on botanical art. We will cover colour theory, colour mixing and watercolour techniques. For students of all abilities.

  • Upholstery Workshop - Cindy Mason
    Why not bring that old chair or stool to give it a new lease of life? You will be taught the correct techniques using traditional and modern materials. There will be group demonstrations and individual instruction.

  • Sensational Screen Printing - Ricki Outis
    A week of discovery as you learn different techniques for screen printing onto textiles. This medium is colourful, adaptable and amazingly fast. The emphasis is on the experimental and you can print onto lengths of fabric, T-shirts, bags or pillowcases.

  • Walking in Cambridgeshire - David Thomas
    Explore the footpaths and ancient tracks of this beautiful county. Walks will include 10 miles around Grafham, a 13-mile stretch of the Wimpole Way, and the Bishops Way Walk. Please ask the College for a leaflet with details and book ahead if possible.
